Monthly China October | K-Visa/ Rare Earth/ 9 Military Purge/ Sanlitun Manifestation/Shanghai Halloween

Don’t ask a Chinese what’s your dream, instead, you should ask them what’s your fear. Because being able to and being allowed to pursue your dream is such a privilege that only applies to a small number in China. In reality, most is driven by fear. To a Chinese, to fully realize their fear and overcome it is such a big step in their life. Such a step demands courage, which is a rare trait even among all the human beings.

So, to figure out, of which the Chinese people is fear, can give you brighter insight than asking their dream, which is always secondary. For example, on the last day of October, when people in the democratic countries were enjoying the Halloween with spooky or funny costumes, the most sighted costume in every street in the major cities of China was the police uniform, especially in Shanghai, the setting of police car was full fledged in every major gathering spot . Policeman would stop anyone in whatever costume using the same language like, ‘Halloween is a western holiday which is not for China, we don’t celebrate it, go undress yourself right now’. Then the cosplayer would be quote ‘accompanied’ by the police to remove their make up. Can you imagine it? On the street of China, what scares people most is not the sight of a devil or monster, but the Chinese policeman. At the same time, our general secretary, Xi Jingping was watching G-dragon’s show in APEC’s banquet with typical unreadable expression on his face. If you know that South Korea’s entertainment industry has been banned over a decade in China, you would understand how Chinese were amused when seeing such a view on the social media.

But let’s rewind, on the first day of October. Chinese government launched the K-visa which allows foreigners with STEM diploma to come in China  way more easier than before. Most Chinese IT workers made complaints and even direct critic to state media on Chinese social media platform. As everyone knows that the economy is on the downside, it’s understandable that the idea of some foreigners joining the competition is not favored by local IT job-seekers. On the other hand, I  just want friendly remind those future K-visa holders that the rumor is that this visa is designed for those Chinese immigrants in the US who’s of special background to come back in China. Rumor as it is, I still recommend you to check by yourself. Because China is never open nor international, if it adopts something unnormal to its usual attitude, it’s logical to have a doubt. A week later, on the10th October, Trump snapped to Chinese government over the rare earth license, playing the card of tariff again. I’ve been a bit sick to see this kind of news of rare earth and tariff flooding in my newsfeeds. And, what amused me most is that the Chinese government really played the card of rare earth, which is a kind of cliche in my college time. Because every freshman in the Chinese universities would  sit into a compulsory class called the Political Strategy and Policy. And this card of rare earth has been smugly stressed by all the lecturers I remembered. So for me, it’s funny to see this long time cliche still catch the US off guard, really ? What’s your FBI doing all the time? For your information, there are six state enterprises control the rare earth export, and more than 90% rare earth comes form inner Mongolia in China. Mining rare earth is a huge damage to environment, and inner mongolia is famous for sand storm, a revenge from the nature I guess. So if you’re a common western listener. The thing important you need to know is that, rare earth is not rare at all, it’s simply a shitty job that your country is not willing to take for the cost of nature.

A week later, October 18th, 9 high level commanders in the PLA, people’s liberation army, were taken down in the name of corruption. They belong, as Chinese know, to the group of Xi Jingping raised up from Fujian province, thus rumor is like Xi’s power was sabotaged, which is a drama that we Chinese happy to see. And it’s said that the force behind this military purge is from Jiang ZeMing’s clan. Whatever, dear democratic citizen, always watch out your army, China couldn’t reach democracy because the army is still controlled by dictator. It’s nothing to do with morality or culture. I’ve tired to see some Europeans or Americans defend Chinese regime in the name of difference in Chinese civilization. Common Chinese are always fighting for the universal humanitarian value, like on the 27th of October, someone put on the revolution slogan with handwriting in Beijing again, in the center of Sanlitun. This time, he or she is still not be found out by the police till the moment I write, which I think would become a new normality for a changing China
